India’s strategic submarine modernization effort is advancing with the development of the S-5 class SSBN, a program intended to significantly enhance the country’s nuclear deterrence posture. Recent reports indicate that construction activities for the lead submarine began in late 2025, marking the formal launch of India’s largest ballistic missile submarine project to date. Although previous discussions envisioned six vessels, current planning appears centered on four submarines, supported by an option for future expansion depending on operational requirements. With an estimated submerged displacement of 13,500 tons, the S-5 class will offer improved endurance, greater missile capacity, and enhanced survivability compared to existing Arihant-class boats. Defence planners are also studying follow-on designs, including a larger “S-5 Plus” concept and a potential next-generation S-6 class optimized for future missile systems and reactor technologies. These developments reflect a long-term strategy to maintain credible continuous-at-sea deterrence. Scheduled for induction in the early 2030s, the S-5 submarines will carry advanced K-series ballistic missiles capable of providing secure second-strike capability from deep ocean patrol areas, reinforcing India’s strategic deterrence architecture for decades to come.
