RTX’s Raytheon has successfully completed a major demonstration of its Next Generation Short Range Interceptor (NGSRI), marking significant progress toward replacing the long-serving FIM-92 Stinger missile. During the latest evaluation, multiple interceptor missiles successfully detected, tracked, and engaged representative aerial targets, validating the weapon’s seeker performance, guidance algorithms, target acquisition capability, and interception accuracy. The NGSRI combines a modern soldier-portable Command Launch Assembly with an advanced electro-optical seeker, enhanced digital processing, and a high-performance solid rocket motor developed by Lockheed Martin. Designed to defeat increasingly complex threats such as drones, helicopters, cruise missiles, and low-flying aircraft, the interceptor is expected to provide improved engagement range, greater resistance to electronic countermeasures, and higher accuracy than legacy systems. The successful demonstration represents another important milestone in the US Army’s effort to modernize short-range air defense by introducing a highly mobile, next-generation interceptor capable of operating effectively in increasingly contested battlefield environments.
