Indonesia’s state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL has advanced to the pre-production stage of its Scorpene-class submarine program, marking a significant step in the country’s naval modernization effort. Developed in partnership with France’s Naval Group, the submarines will feature lithium-ion battery technology instead of traditional lead-acid systems, improving underwater endurance, mobility, and operational efficiency without requiring air-independent propulsion. The program includes domestic infrastructure preparation, workforce training, and technology transfer initiatives designed to strengthen Indonesia’s indigenous submarine manufacturing capabilities.
