Romania has moved forward with plans to modernize its land forces by selecting Rheinmetall’s Lynx infantry fighting vehicle in a procurement program valued at €2.6 billion. The agreement covers the acquisition of 232 vehicles under EU funding, with additional units planned through domestic financing. The proposal has been submitted for parliamentary approval and is expected to be completed within eight years. This initiative reflects Romania’s efforts to enhance defense readiness amid heightened regional tensions. The Lynx KF41 outperformed competing vehicles such as the CV90 and K21 Redback due to its flexibility and advanced design. Featuring a modular structure, the vehicle allows separation of core and mission systems, enabling rapid adaptation for various operational roles. It supports a crew of three and can transport up to eight troops. With a powerful engine delivering over 1,100 horsepower, it achieves speeds of 65 km/h. The KF41 is armed with a 35mm cannon and supports integration of advanced weaponry and systems, including missiles and drones. Its protection suite includes multiple layers to counter threats like anti-tank weapons. The platform is highly versatile and can be configured for roles ranging from frontline combat to logistics and recovery operations.
