Japan has completed the physical build phase of its Mogami-class frigate program with the launch of JS Yoshii, the twelfth ship in the series. Constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the vessel symbolizes Tokyo’s shift toward compact, highly automated warships optimized for distributed maritime operations. The Mogami program was conceived to counter rising regional maritime pressures while reducing crew burdens and lifecycle costs. Since the commissioning of JS Mogami in 2022, the class has become central to Japan’s surface fleet renewal strategy. Measuring roughly 133 meters in length and capable of sustained high speeds, the frigates combine stealth shaping with modular mission systems. Their weapons suite enables anti-air, anti-surface, anti-submarine, and mine warfare operations, allowing a single platform to cover roles previously spread across multiple ship types. With the final launch complete, Japan now shifts focus toward operational integration, training, and potential export variants as it prepares for next-generation surface combatant programs.
