The Type 212CD is a next-generation conventional submarine developed jointly by thyssenkrupp Marine Systems and the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency for Germany and Norway. Based on the Type 212A, it introduces a larger hull, a distinctive diamond-shaped outer profile, improved acoustic stealth, greater endurance and an advanced combat system.

The submarine is designed for intelligence gathering, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and special operations. Its intended operating areas include the Baltic Sea, North Atlantic and Arctic, where Germany and Norway want stronger undersea surveillance and defence capabilities.

The Type 212A provided the foundation. It entered German Navy service in 2005 and was among the early operational submarines to use hydrogen fuel-cell air-independent propulsion. The system allowed long submerged periods with low noise. The 212CD was later developed to provide more space for modern sensors, combat systems and additional stealth measures.

Germany and Norway signed their joint development agreement in 2017. In 2021, TKMS received the first production contract for six boats, with two for Germany and four for Norway. Construction began in 2023. Later orders expanded the planned fleets, and the source states that both countries were expected to reach six submarines each. The first Norwegian delivery is planned for 2029, with German deliveries expected in the early 2030s.

A major feature is fuel-cell AIP, which reduces the need to snorkel for battery charging. This supports longer submerged patrols and can reduce exposure to detection. The diamond-shaped outer hull is intended to reduce radar reflections when the submarine operates near the surface, while its acoustic design uses vibration isolation, raft-mounted machinery and sound-absorbing materials.

The sensor suite combines sonar, optronic masts, electronic support measures and an integrated combat management system. Sensor data can be combined into a wider tactical picture to improve detection and decision-making.

The common design also provides practical benefits. Shared architecture can simplify crew training, maintenance, spare parts and software upgrades for both navies. However, the submarine has limitations, including lower high-speed endurance than nuclear-powered submarines, higher procurement costs and programme complexity.

The Type 212CD has attracted interest outside Germany and Norway. The source states that Canada identified the design for its future Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. Future development is expected to include improved networking, unmanned underwater vehicle integration, electronic warfare capabilities and further reductions in acoustic signatures.
