Japan has launched a new large patrol vessel intended to strengthen the Japan Coast Guard’s maritime security, rescue, and law-enforcement capabilities. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding inaugurated JS Yashima (PLH-46) at its Shimonoseki Shipyard in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Measuring 134 meters, the vessel was ordered through a fiscal 2023 supplementary budget worth around 19.6 billion yen. The ship represents a second-generation Mizuho-class patrol platform and is designed to replace the previous JS Yashima, commissioned in 1988 and retired early following severe deterioration of its hull. The new vessel can exceed 25 knots and incorporates aviation facilities, including a flight deck and hangar for two medium helicopters. It will support maritime crime prevention, search-and-rescue operations, and missions in remote and demanding environments. For self-protection and operational duties, the ship carries 40mm and 20mm machine guns along with remotely controlled water cannons. After completing hull, engine, electronic, and weapons outfitting, JS Yashima is expected to be delivered to the Japan Coast Guard in 2027.
