The Swedish government has announced plans to procure four advanced frigates from France’s Naval Group to modernize its naval fleet and strengthen regional maritime security. After reviewing competing bids from British and Spanish shipbuilders, Stockholm selected the French proposal based on operational capability, delivery speed, and proven air defense performance. The frigates are expected to begin entering service from 2030 and will enhance Sweden’s ability to conduct air defense, maritime patrol, and regional deterrence operations. Officials estimate the cost at over 10 billion kronor per ship, depending on final weapon and equipment packages. The agreement highlights growing European defense cooperation and the increasing importance of naval modernization amid evolving security challenges in Northern Europe.
