France has confirmed the procurement of a fifth Frégate de Défense et d’Intervention (FDI) frigate from Naval Group, to be named FS Amiral Cabanier. This advanced 4,500-ton warship features a fully digital architecture that allows continuous software upgrades without requiring major structural modifications, along with integrated cyber defense capabilities. The order is part of France’s long-term military programming law, which ensures phased defense investments. Built at the Lorient shipyard, the FDI program is central to France’s naval modernization strategy. Each vessel is equipped for multi-domain warfare, carrying advanced missile systems, torpedoes, and naval guns, while supporting helicopter and drone operations. With a top speed of 27 knots and an endurance of 45 days, the frigate enhances operational reach and flexibility for the French Navy.
