General Dynamics Electric Boat has accepted delivery of the floating dry dock Atlas, which will support construction of the US Navy’s Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines. The dock will operate from the company’s Groton, Connecticut facility, enabling movement between assembly areas and accommodating testing and ceremonial milestones. Built by Bollinger Shipyards and christened in 2025, Atlas measures 618 feet in length and will support the Navy’s 12-boat Columbia program, which replaces the aging Ohio-class fleet. The lead submarines are scheduled for commissioning by 2031, with additional contracts accelerating production to meet strategic nuclear deterrence requirements.
