Under the Near Future Submarine (NFS) program, the Italian Navy’s initial group of U212A Todaro-class submarines will be upgraded by a contract modification that the European intergovernmental agency Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR) has signed. Based on a mid-life upgrade research that highlights which systems and machinery need to be updated, taking into account improvements made to the newer NFS boats. The project will close the technology gap between the two generations of submarines, assuring cost efficiency through shared logistic support.
