Bharat Forge Limited has signed a ₹425 crore contract with the Ministry of Defence to supply 12 indigenous 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators (MTGGs) for Indian Navy warships. The programme represents a significant advancement in naval power-generation technology and is primarily aimed at replacing existing auxiliary electrical generation systems aboard Kolkata-class destroyers. The contract includes manufacturing, supply, and long-term lifecycle support, ensuring sustained operational availability of the equipment. Each MTGG will provide approximately 1.25 MW of electrical power, offering higher power density compared with existing diesel-generator-based systems. Unlike propulsion turbines that generate mechanical power for ship movement, these generators are designed to support electrical requirements for radars, sensors, sonar systems, electronic warfare suites, communications equipment, combat management systems, and weapons technologies. The transition toward gas turbine-based auxiliary power generation provides advantages including reduced weight, compact design, faster response to changing power demands, and improved efficiency. The additional electrical capacity will create greater growth margins for future high-energy naval technologies, particularly Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) such as laser-based defence systems. Future naval laser weapons require substantial and stable electrical power to counter drones, missiles, and small surface threats. The enhanced power architecture could also support next-generation radars, advanced electronic warfare systems, and future sensor networks. Beyond immediate naval applications, the programme strengthens India’s industrial capability in advanced turbine technologies. Bharat Forge’s involvement could support future expansion into larger auxiliary and propulsion-class turbine systems, contributing to long-term defence self-reliance. Manufacturing activities planned in Visakhapatnam will further strengthen India’s indigenous naval engineering ecosystem.
