LightPath Technologies has secured an $11-million follow-on order to supply advanced infrared imaging systems for counter-unmanned aerial system applications, reinforcing its growing presence in the defense electro-optics sector. The contract, awarded by an undisclosed global technology partner, supports the production of thermal cameras capable of detecting and tracking drones used in defense and public safety operations. A major aspect of the program is the gradual introduction of LightPath’s proprietary BlackDiamond infrared optical material, which is designed to replace conventional germanium lenses commonly used in thermal imaging. BlackDiamond offers comparable infrared transmission performance while reducing dependence on germanium, a material facing supply uncertainty following international export restrictions. The phased transition reflects the industry’s broader effort to secure resilient supply chains for critical defense components. The award also builds on a series of recent defense contracts involving advanced infrared imaging systems for naval surveillance, battlefield sensing, and security applications, highlighting the increasing demand for high-performance thermal technologies in modern military operations.
