Romania has secured a €223-million contract with Turkey for a HISAR-class corvette that includes crew training and extensive logistical support to ensure operational readiness from delivery. The purchase is part of Romania’s long-term naval modernization effort to acquire ships capable of defending critical maritime assets and executing combat operations in the Black Sea. The project received high-level approval in 2025 and unanimous backing from parliamentary defense committees. The 2,300-ton, 99-meter HISAR-class corvette is a multi-role combatant equipped with a 76mm OTO Melara main gun, RAM air-defense launchers, Mk 32 torpedo systems, and several remote weapon stations. Its modern radar, sonar, and EW systems enable robust surface and air threat detection and seamless integration into networked maritime operations. Turkish-operated HISAR corvettes have demonstrated their combat utility in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, contributing to NATO drills, escort tasks, anti-submarine patrols, and infrastructure protection missions.
