Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea has officially submitted its submarine designs in competition for the Hellenic Navy’s multibillion-euro naval modernization initiative targeting fleet enhancement and advanced maritime capabilities. HHI showcased its proven experience through its construction of six of the nineSohn Won-yil-class (KSS-II) submarines within South Korea’s Korean Attack Submarine Program, alongside a $360 million contract covering modernization of the first three KSS-II units built between 2007 and 2009. The company also referenced deliveries under the KSS-III program, noting its delivery of the final Batch I submarine,ROKS Shin Chae-ho. HHI’s visit included presentations on other naval vessel designs indicating interest beyond submarine platforms. Competitors include Hanwha Ocean with its KSS-III class, Saab Kockums with an A26-based (Blekinge-class) submarine, plus German and French contenders offering Type 209NG and Scorpène Evolved submarines, respectively. The Hellenic Ministry of Defence will conduct a comprehensive review of all bids in the months ahead as part of Greece’s ambitious “Aspida tou Achillea” naval upgrade program.
