The US Army has advanced modernization of its close-combat munitions portfolio through the introduction of the M111 Offensive Hand Grenade, marking the first new hand-thrown explosive system adopted since the Vietnam War era. Developed in collaboration with Battelle and the Army’s Close Combat Systems Program Office, the weapon underwent extensive testing, qualification, and manufacturing validation before receiving approval for full-rate production. Thousands of prototype units were produced to evaluate performance, safety, and reliability under operational conditions. Unlike traditional fragmentation grenades, the M111 relies primarily on blast overpressure effects, reducing the risk posed by flying shrapnel. Its design aims to improve effectiveness during close-quarters engagements while enhancing safety for friendly forces operating nearby. The program reflects the Army’s ongoing effort to equip soldiers with modernized infantry weapons optimized for contemporary combat environments.
