Rheinmetall and the Italian Ministry of Defence have signed an agreement to modernize a large portion of Italy’s MATS anti-tank mine inventory. The project, led by Rheinmetall’s subsidiary RWM Italia and the Agenzia Industrie Difesa, aims to upgrade the mines to the MK2 configuration, enhancing safety and operational effectiveness. The modernization includes development, testing, and life-extension work, ensuring the weapons remain viable for future use. Production activities will be carried out at Rheinmetall’s facilities in Italy, including sites in Brescia and Sardinia. The initiative is expected to begin within a year and will support job creation in the defense sector.
