Indian Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi has confirmed that Project-76—India’s next major submarine initiative aimed at developing a new class of indigenous conventional diesel-electric submarines—is in its early stages. Building upon the technological and operational foundations laid by Project-75 and Project-75I, this effort marks a pivotal move toward achieving full self-reliance in undersea warfare capabilities. The design phase is already underway, with a final blueprint expected by 2028, followed by Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approval projected around 2033–34. Significantly, Project-76 will be the first submarine class to be entirely designed in-house, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) preparing separate designs for evaluation by the Navy.
