The UK’s Defence Equipment and Support organization has awarded Saab UK a contract valued at £1.8 million, approximately $2.45 million, to provide logistics and sustainment support for the Giraffe 1X mobile radar system.Under the agreement, Saab will supply equipment, operator training, helpdesk assistance, and spare parts. The support period is scheduled to run from July 2026 through March 2027, with an option that could extend the arrangement until March 2030.DE&S awarded the contract directly to Saab UK because the company is the manufacturer and design authority for the Giraffe 1X. Saab also holds the intellectual property and proprietary technical information needed to provide specialized support for the radar. The UK initially ordered 11 Giraffe 1X systems in 2023. A further procurement was announced in April 2026, increasing Britain’s investment in the lightweight radar capability.Giraffe 1X is a compact 3D AESA radar developed for tactical air and surface surveillance. Weighing less than 150 kilograms, the system can be transported and rapidly deployed using light vehicles, masts, or tripods. Its compact architecture allows small teams to operate the radar in forward locations. The radar can detect and track low-altitude targets, including drones, helicopters, and slow-moving aircraft. It can also contribute to counter-uncrewed aircraft operations and provide warning against rocket, artillery, and mortar threats. These capabilities make the Giraffe 1X suitable for protecting forward operating bases, maneuvering units, and other important military assets. Saab has also expanded its UK industrial presence through a defense facility in Fareham, where the company supports radar and underwater robotics programs.
