California firm Genasys has received $1.4 million in orders for Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD) systems from customers in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
The orders include new and additional purchases from Australia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Papua New Guinea, Lithuania, and Latvia.
LRAD equipment will be deployed by naval, coast guard, police, and security organizations for long-range communication and warning operations.
Long-Range Acoustic Systems
LRAD systems transmit live or recorded voice messages and warning tones in a specific direction.
Their purpose is to make instructions intelligible over long distances and through wind, engine, crowd, and other background noise.
The equipment uses Genasys’ Advanced Driver and Waveguide technology to concentrate sound toward the intended area.
Depending on the model, messages can be transmitted from close range to as far as 5.5 kilometers (3.4 miles).
LRAD equipment is available in portable, fixed, remotely operated, vehicle-mounted, and shipboard configurations.
Some models can also be connected to radar or motion sensors, allowing operators to detect potential threats, direct the acoustic system toward them, and issue warnings from a control center.
Naval and coast guard crews can use the systems to contact approaching vessels, communicate instructions, assess their intentions, and establish exclusion zones before taking further action.
Other applications include vessel interceptions, search-and-rescue operations, port and coastal security, and anti-piracy missions.
Police and security services can deploy the equipment for crowd communication, perimeter protection, and warnings around government buildings or critical infrastructure.
