HAL and HENSOLDT have finalized a major technology transfer agreement to equip Indian military helicopters with advanced LiDAR-based Obstacle Avoidance Systems (OAS). Signed at the Dubai Airshow 2025, the partnership includes full transfer of design and manufacturing IP to HAL, enabling domestic production, integration, and potential future exports. The first installations will occur on HAL’s Light Combat Helicopter, followed by the Advanced Light Helicopter and additional rotary platforms. The OAS integrates HENSOLDT’s SferiSense LiDAR sensor with a DVE computer, delivering real-time terrain awareness, synthetic vision, and enhanced navigation cues.LiDAR-based obstacle avoidance is increasingly standard in global military fleets. Germany employs such systems on its NH90 and Tiger helicopters for safe navigation in low-visibility or forested environments. France uses similar technologies on its Tiger and H145M platforms, while the US deploys comparable solutions on UH-60 Black Hawks and AH-64 Apaches to mitigate dust, darkness, and degraded conditions.
