The United Nations has raised serious concerns over rising tensions in the Middle East after fresh military exchanges between Iran and the United States threatened to unravel an already fragile ceasefire. Addressing the Security Council, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cautioned that continued confrontations could rapidly evolve into a wider regional war. The latest violence erupted after Iran targeted US military installations in Jordan and Bahrain following American retaliatory strikes linked to the destruction of a US helicopter. Human rights chief Volker Turk echoed the warning, stating that repeated violations of ceasefire agreements increase the risk of a larger conflict. The renewed instability comes after months of unrest triggered by US-Israeli military action against Iran, creating significant geopolitical and economic repercussions across the region.
