In a move to overhaul its artillery capabilities, the Spanish military is planning to procure more than 200 self-propelled howitzers to replace its aging M109 systems. The effort, worth over €3 billion ($3.51 billion), is divided into two major subprograms for tracked and wheeled platforms.

The first subprogram, aimed at both the Spanish Army and Marine Infantry, includes the acquisition of 128 tracked howitzers for €1.82 billion ($2.12 billion). According to the Spanish Ministry of Industry and Tourism, the new systems will prioritize mobility, automation, and efficiency, with minimal crew requirements and rapid response. The howitzers are expected to feature 47-52 caliber barrels and achieve ranges beyond 40 km using base-bleed rounds. The package also includes various support vehicles such as ammunition carriers, recovery, command, and optional maintenance units.

The second subprogram involves 86 wheeled howitzers for the army at a cost of €1.18 billion ($1.38 billion). These will come in either 8×8 or 10×10 variants, with a matching number of ammunition vehicles, along with recovery and maintenance units.
