The Indian Army is upgrading its ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft guns to address the growing threat of drones and loitering munitions across sensitive borders. The modernization introduces EO/IR sensors, laser rangefinding, and automated fire control systems that enhance detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities. By replacing manual aiming with powered tracking systems, the upgraded platform reduces reaction time and operator workload while improving hit probability against small, agile targets. The deployment of 142 systems for protection of vulnerable areas highlights the increasing importance of low-cost, effective air defence solutions. The program also aligns with upgrades to other systems like the Shilka, ensuring standardization and improved logistics across India’s air defence network.
