The Indian Air Force is preparing to induct the Astra MkII beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile as the next major enhancement to its indigenous missile inventory. Powered by a dual-pulse rocket motor, the weapon offers significantly improved energy retention, terminal maneuverability, and engagement range compared to earlier variants. Integration across multiple fighter platforms—including the Su-30MKI, Rafale, and future Tejas variants—will expand India’s long-range interception capability while reducing reliance on imported missile systems. The phased production strategy also allows future extended-range variants to enter service without disrupting manufacturing, ensuring continuous modernization of India’s BVR arsenal as regional aerial threats continue to evolve.
