Canada is strengthening its future air combat capability through the procurement of Joint Strike Missiles (JSM) to equip its incoming fleet of F-35A Lightning II fighters. Developed by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, the missile is optimized for internal carriage, allowing the F-35 to maintain its low-observable characteristics while conducting long-range precision strikes. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, autonomous mission planning, imaging infrared target recognition, and terrain-following flight profiles, the JSM provides effective engagement of both maritime and land-based targets under contested conditions. The acquisition enhances Canada’s ability to conduct stand-off precision attacks while increasing interoperability with allied F-35 operators already fielding the missile. Combined with the country’s fighter modernization program, the weapon significantly expands operational reach, survivability, and multi-domain combat effectiveness.
