South Korea Backs 50 Startups to Develop Military TechnologiesSouth Korea’s Ministry of SMEs and Startups (MSS) is expanding its defense innovation efforts by seeking around 50 startups and technology firms to participate in the latest phase of its “Challenge for All – Defense” open innovation program. The initiative connects emerging companies with established defense contractors and military organizations to accelerate the development and validation of advanced defense technologies. Selected participants can receive up to 100 million won ($67,500) for proof-of-concept projects and prototype development, with successful candidates becoming eligible for additional government funding of up to 600 million won ($405,500) to support research, commercialization, and technology deployment. The selection process includes document reviews, one-on-one consultations with military officials and defense suppliers, and assessments of collaborative development plans before final participants are chosen. Applications remain open until early August. Building on the program’s first phase, which supported 10 companies earlier this year, the initiative aims to help startups transition innovative solutions into operational military capabilities while providing the armed forces with faster access to emerging technologies. The program reflects South Korea’s broader strategy to strengthen its indigenous defense innovation ecosystem as global demand for advanced military technologies continues to grow alongside rising defense expenditure worldwide.
