Indra Sistemas has taken the lead in a consortium tasked with delivering a new AESA-based counter-battery radar for Spain’s armed forces. Under a 30-million-euro contract awarded in late 2025, the system will be designed and produced entirely within Spain and is expected to enter service by 2028. The initiative brings together a network of domestic defense companies, including GMV, Nord Motorreductores, and several smaller enterprises specializing in advanced electronics and precision manufacturing. The radar will replace the long-serving AN/TPQ-36 Firefinder system currently used by the Spanish Army. As a nationally coordinated project, engineering activities will be distributed across multiple regions, with systems integration led from Madrid and advanced sensor development conducted in Vigo. Additional manufacturing will support new industrial capabilities in regions such as Córdoba, Aragón, Catalonia, and the Basque Country. By incorporating Gallium Nitride technology, the AESA radar will achieve greater power efficiency, extended detection range, and improved resilience to electronic warfare threats. The system will automatically detect and locate the origin of hostile indirect fire while integrating with command-and-control networks. Its flexible architecture will also enable additional roles such as battlefield surveillance, protection of forward bases, and coastal monitoring.
