France has taken a key step toward operationalizing shipborne uncrewed aviation with a production order for six VSR700 drones for the French Navy. Awarded to Airbus Helicopters and Naval Group, the contract moves the VSR700 from a demonstrator platform into frontline naval service. Designed to operate from surface combatants, the rotary-wing UAS will enhance maritime situational awareness by providing persistent ISR coverage beyond the line of sight. Integration into naval combat systems will be handled by Naval Group, while Airbus supplies the air vehicle and mission systems. The drone’s design is based on a proven light helicopter platform and offers autonomous VTOL capability, long endurance, and sensor flexibility. French officials also highlight its dual-use potential for search-and-rescue and disaster response missions. The program supports France’s broader push toward manned-uncrewed teaming, reducing risk to aircrews while expanding operational reach in contested maritime environments.
