The Army is retiring its older drones – Gray Eagle and Shadow – to make way for newer, smarter UAVs. Large Group 4/5 drones will replace the Gray Eagle by 2028, while smaller Group 3 drones will be bought on the commercial market as early as 2026. Brigades lost the Shadow in 2024, so this plan fills that gap more quickly.
