Newly released imagery confirms that the U.S. Air Force has deployed a seventh MQ-9A Reaper drone from Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, expanding persistent surveillance across the Caribbean and near Venezuela. The deployment highlights Washington’s increasing reliance on unmanned systems to support counter-narcotics operations and regional security cooperation. The former military airfield, known as BQN, has emerged as a key forward hub for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions supporting U.S. Southern Command and Joint Interagency Task Force South. The latest Reaper joins a growing fleet of remotely piloted aircraft operating from the site, coinciding with intensified surveillance of maritime drug trafficking routes linking South America, Central America, and the U.S. southeastern coast. Observers have noted increased MQ-9 flight activity over the Mona Passage and deeper into the southern Caribbean, with operations remaining within international airspace. Equipped with full-motion video and synthetic-aperture radar optimized for maritime domain awareness, the Reapers enable detection and tracking of low-profile vessels such as narco-submarines and fast boats.
