The US Navy is accelerating its shift toward autonomous maritime operations by formally inducting medium unmanned surface vessels into fleet control. After years of testing and fleet exercises, Seahawk and Sea Hunter will now operate as part of active units, supporting surveillance and undersea warfare missions while sharing sensor data with manned platforms. Navy leaders highlighted rapid growth in small USV numbers and the creation of new organizational structures to support unmanned operations. Industry partners such as Leidos and Textron have played key roles in advancing medium and mine countermeasure USVs, while recent introductions of next-generation multi-mission platforms point to a broader strategy of distributing sensors and, eventually, weapons across autonomous surface fleets.
