South Korea Invests $36M to Build AI Defense Robotics Innovation HubSouth Korea has announced a 50-billion-won ($36 million) investment to establish an AI defense robotics innovation cluster aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of next-generation military robotics. Led by South Chungcheong Province in partnership with the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the city of Nonsan, the initiative will bring together government agencies, defense companies, universities, research institutions, and the military to create a unified ecosystem for AI-powered defense technologies. The project will feature specialized facilities for research, testing, technology validation, and live demonstrations, enabling startups and established defense firms to transform innovative concepts into operational military capabilities more efficiently. Planned infrastructure includes a central support center, a demonstration facility, and a 45,000-square-meter testing ground where AI-enabled robotic systems can undergo performance evaluations before entering service. Scheduled to continue through 2031, the initiative is expected to strengthen South Korea’s defense industrial base, accelerate military innovation, and generate approximately 509 billion won ($368 million) in economic output. The program also complements broader national efforts to expand sovereign defense AI capabilities, including the Add+i secure AI platform for classified research, the collaboration between Naver and Korea Aerospace Industries on AI-powered military technologies, and Hyundai Rotem’s development of advanced robotic defense systems, reinforcing South Korea’s ambition to become a global leader in AI-enabled defense technologies.
