Saab to Equip Germany’s New MEKO A-200 Frigates With Advanced Combat SystemsSaab has secured an 8.7-billion Swedish kronor ($900 million) contract from German shipbuilder TKMS to provide advanced combat systems, sensors, and composite structures for four new MEKO A-200 DEU-class frigates being built for the German Navy. Scheduled for delivery between 2029 and 2032, the agreement also includes an option for four additional vessels, potentially expanding Saab’s role in one of Germany’s largest naval modernization efforts. Under the contract, Saab will integrate its 9LV Combat System, which incorporates the Combat Management System and Fire Control System, alongside Sea Giraffe 4A Fixed Face and Sea Giraffe 1X radar systems, passive sensors, and lightweight composite superstructures. The advanced suite is intended to improve situational awareness, target engagement, and overall combat effectiveness across multiple operational scenarios. Germany’s procurement follows parliamentary approval of approximately €6.3 billion for the initial four frigates after the cancellation of the troubled F126 program. Designed primarily for anti-submarine warfare, the 121-meter MEKO A-200 DEU combines high-speed performance with long-endurance operations, achieving speeds above 29 knots and a range exceeding 6,500 nautical miles. The frigate can support helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, modular mission payloads, and rigid-hulled inflatable boats, providing flexibility for combat, surveillance, and maritime security missions. The program significantly strengthens Germany’s future naval capabilities while reinforcing Saab’s position as a leading supplier of advanced naval combat technologies for European fleets.
