French Tigre Mk2 Helicopter Gains Mistral 3 Missile for Enhanced Counter-Drone OperationsMBDA has successfully integrated the advanced Mistral 3 air-to-air missile into the French Armed Forces’ Tigre Mk2 attack helicopter, significantly enhancing its ability to counter drones and other low-flying aerial threats. The upgrade builds on the helicopter’s existing Mistral 2 launch system through new software and technical modifications, enabling seamless deployment of the latest missile variant. Developed in partnership with France’s defense procurement agency (DGA) and the French Armed Forces, the integration was completed under an accelerated schedule and validated through a successful live-fire demonstration. The Mistral 3 introduces several performance improvements, including an imaging infrared seeker, stronger resistance to electronic countermeasures and decoys, and an engagement range of up to 8 kilometers. The fire-and-forget missile carries a 3-kilogram warhead and travels at speeds approaching 930 meters per second, providing rapid response against aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other airborne threats. Beyond air-launched applications, the missile can also be deployed from land-based and naval platforms, increasing operational flexibility across multiple combat environments. The Tigre Mk2, manufactured by Airbus Helicopters, is a modernized reconnaissance and attack helicopter equipped with enhanced survivability features such as jam-resistant GPS, IFF Mode 5 identification, and improved ballistic protection. Its existing armament includes a 30mm Nexter M781 cannon, Hellfire missiles, 68mm rockets, and Mistral missiles. The addition of the Mistral 3 strengthens the platform’s air defense capability while improving its effectiveness in modern battlefields where unmanned aerial systems are becoming an increasingly significant threat.
