Belgium is reinforcing its national air defense posture through the planned acquisition of ten NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems), significantly expanding its ability to counter modern airborne threats. The procurement, conducted through cooperation with the Netherlands, enables Belgium to benefit from an established acquisition framework while improving interoperability within NATO. NASAMS integrates networked command-and-control systems, advanced surveillance radars, electro-optical sensors, and mobile launchers capable of firing AIM-120 AMRAAM and AIM-9X interceptor missiles. Designed to engage aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles, the system provides layered protection for strategic infrastructure and military installations. The acquisition forms part of Belgium’s wider defense modernization program, which also includes future long-range missile defense investments. Once deployed, NASAMS will substantially improve national airspace security while strengthening Belgium’s contribution to NATO’s collective integrated air and missile defense architecture.
