France’s MTO-LP Loitering Munition to Boost NATO’s Long-Range Strike Capabilities
Designed to satisfy the needs of both France and NATO partners, the MTO-LP long-range loitering munition will offer strike ranges of several hundred kilometres, with the flexibility to extend further if required. The system can be deployed in under 30 minutes by two personnel and supports simultaneous launches of up to ten munitions for coordinated engagements. Its modular design is easily adaptable to various missions, with a payload that ensures safety and platform independence, reducing logistical demands in forward operations.

The MTO-LP will be capable of precise long-range target engagement and is set to achieve its initial operational capability in 2026 with a production goal of 1,000 warheads per year. By 2027, the system will integrate advanced features such as countermeasures, diversified mission profiles, and new payload options. The first flight tests are scheduled for mid-2025.

The joint effort between Thales and Boreal will enhance France’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and provide opportunities for cross-border industrial collaboration, particularly with Belgium.
