Airbus and Saab are in advanced exploratory talks to co-develop a loyal wingman–type unmanned combat aircraft, potentially forming a new European alternative to emerging US systems. Industry officials note that the effort could become a strategic fallback if FCAS—Europe’s flagship future air-combat program—faces further delays or cancellation. Airbus has already demonstrated extensive interest in MUM-T technologies, unveiling its Wingman concept in 2024 and teaming with Kratos to market the XQ-58A to Germany. The initiative aligns with Europe’s growing push for autonomous teaming platforms and mirrors similar transatlantic industry collaborations.
