General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is working with Saab to introduce Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) capabilities to its MQ-9B family of unmanned aircraft, which includes SkyGuardian®, SeaGuardian®, the UK’s Protector, and the in-development MQ-9B STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) variant. GA-ASI plans to conduct its first AEW flight using the MQ-9B in 2026.
This collaboration will combine Saab’s proven AEW sensor technology with the MQ-9B, known globally for its unmatched endurance and operational range. The integration will enable the MQ-9B to offer air dominance and situational awareness over both maritime and land domains at significantly lower costs compared to legacy systems.
