HII has significantly expanded its UK unmanned systems facility, underscoring growing demand for autonomous maritime platforms across Europe. The enlarged Portchester site will provide comprehensive support for REMUS underwater vehicles, including live and virtual training, electronic warfare integration, and fleet sustainment. It will also play a key role in introducing the ROMULUS family of unmanned surface vessels, which leverage AI-enabled autonomy for long-endurance and swarm operations. REMUS variants cover a wide range of missions, from shallow-water mine hunting to deep-sea recovery at depths of 6,000 meters. Built on commercial-standard hulls, ROMULUS USVs are designed for scalable production, high speed, and extended range, reflecting the increasing role of autonomous systems in naval modernization strategies.
