A new hybrid unmanned aircraft concept could soon emerge in European defense aviation as the European Defence Agency commissions Survey Copter to explore the development of a versatile drone platform. The initiative, launched under the Multi-Mission Unmanned Aircraft System project, will evaluate how a single unmanned platform can perform a broad set of operational tasks for European militaries. The concept will build upon Airbus’ Capa-X unmanned aerial system, using it as the foundation for a more adaptable aircraft capable of carrying out missions such as intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic warfare operations, payload transport, and automated aerial refueling. By integrating these capabilities into one system, the project aims to provide armed forces with a flexible tool capable of responding to changing battlefield demands. The study program is scheduled to run for four years, totaling 48 months, and has been assigned a budget of approximately 1.1 million euros. During this period, Survey Copter will analyze design requirements, operational scenarios, and technical feasibility for the hybrid drone. The effort highlights Europe’s broader push to strengthen indigenous unmanned aircraft capabilities and develop next-generation systems that can perform multiple roles within modern military operations.
