The Pentagon has hired Raytheon to develop the SM-2 Block IIICU missile, an improved air-defense system worth $258.7 million. The missile is designed to stop modern threats like cruise missiles and advanced jets. Unlike older versions, it features a dual seeker for better guidance and added maneuverability through redesigned fins and vector thrusting. It can reach 90 miles, extending the defenses of US Navy warships including destroyers and frigates. Canada and other allies are also helping fund and buying the system. The project runs until 2031, with real-world tests beginning in 2027.
