During its Defense Development 2025 exhibition, North Korea revealed a new short-range air defense system that closely mirrors Russia’s Pantsir in both appearance and configuration. The resemblance was immediately apparent in the twin-cannon layout and missile arrangement seen in released images.
What sets Pyongyang’s model apart is its use of a tracked platform rather than the Pantsir’s wheeled truck chassis. This design modification suggests a focus on improving mobility over rough terrain and enhancing protection for the crew in combat zones.
Defense observers interpret the move as part of North Korea’s effort to develop more mobile, resilient air defense units that can integrate with armored and mechanized forces. The system’s role will likely center on defending field units against short-range aerial targets, strengthening Pyongyang’s broader multi-layered defense strategy.
