Lithuania’s €320 million procurement of Saab’s RBS 70 Bolide missiles signals a decisive push to reinforce short-range air defense as regional tensions persist near NATO’s eastern borders. The agreement ensures a steady pipeline of advanced laser-guided missiles capable of defeating a wide range of modern aerial threats while remaining highly resistant to electronic warfare and countermeasures. Unlike infrared-guided systems, the RBS 70’s laser beam-riding guidance offers strong immunity to decoys, a critical advantage in contested electromagnetic environments. The Bolide variant extends engagement envelopes to approximately 9 kilometers in range and 5 kilometers in altitude, significantly enhancing defensive coverage. Lithuanian officials describe the deal as a cornerstone of national air defense modernization, reinforcing both sovereign protection and collective NATO deterrence.
