UK Develops New Technology to Improve Battlefield Vision in Smoke and DustThe United Kingdom is combining three technologies into a new sensing capability designed to help soldiers maintain visibility when battlefield conditions are affected by smoke, dust, and other obscurants.The project is being advanced by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) in partnership with Amethyst Research and Lancaster University. The work focuses on developing a detector capable of identifying useful infrared signals even when conventional sensing conditions are degraded.The technology is intended to address a major battlefield challenge. Smoke, dust, and other airborne particles can interfere with sensors and reduce the ability of soldiers to identify objects or threats. Improving detection under such conditions could provide troops with greater situational awareness.A key element of the new device is a thin absorber layer designed to reduce unwanted heat interference. By limiting the effects of background thermal noise, the system can focus more effectively on weaker infrared signals.The approach could improve the ability of military personnel and sensors to distinguish relevant targets from surrounding environmental effects. Maintaining accurate detection is particularly important in situations where visibility is severely limited.The project demonstrates the UK’s continuing investment in advanced sensing technologies designed to improve battlefield awareness. Rather than relying solely on conventional optical systems, the new detector uses infrared sensing and specialized materials to improve performance in difficult environments.Further development will determine how the technology can be incorporated into military equipment and how effectively it can operate under realistic battlefield conditions.
