Romania has finalized a 625-million-euro ($724 million) agreement to purchase Mistral very short-range air defense systems from France, securing one of the country’s most significant recent air-defense acquisitions. Under the contract, Romania will receive 231 Mistral man-portable air defense units, 934 missiles, ammunition, training services, technical manuals, a training simulator, and comprehensive logistical support. These systems will be integrated across Romania’s Land, Air, Naval, and Special Operations Forces, significantly improving their ability to detect and counter modern aerial threats. The procurement—initially approved by Parliament in June 2022—falls under the EU’s Security Action for Europe initiative, an effort aimed at strengthening Europe’s defense industrial base by promoting joint defense purchases among participating nations. By joining this framework, Romania not only enhances its national air-defense architecture but also supports broader European goals of more cohesive defense planning and industrial cooperation. MBDA’s Mistral missile family is known for its multi-platform flexibility and fire-and-forget guidance, offering protection against a range of threats such as aircraft, unmanned aerial systems, cruise missiles, and enemy surface vessels. The latest Mistral 3 variant provides an engagement range of up to 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) and can intercept targets at altitudes reaching 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). Designed for high maneuverability and supersonic flight, it has demonstrated excellent results in recent trials, including successful engagements of low-observable drones and naval targets, underscoring its effectiveness for Romania’s future air-defense requirements.
