Britain and Germany have taken a major step toward closer defense integration by signing a £52 million contract to jointly acquire and test the RCH 155 155mm self-propelled artillery system. The agreement, announced under the Early Capability Demonstrator initiative, is designed to fast-track artillery modernization while allowing both nations to collaboratively evaluate a next-generation fires capability before committing to large-scale procurement. Under the deal, Germany will field two RCH 155 systems while the UK will operate one, creating a shared test environment for doctrine development, performance analysis, and operational experimentation. For the British Army, the program supports its evolving Mobile Fires Platform strategy, which seeks to replace legacy artillery with a highly mobile, digitally connected system capable of surviving and operating in contested environments. The RCH 155 pairs a combat-proven 155mm L52 gun with the Boxer 8×8 armored chassis, delivering long-range precision fires alongside rapid maneuverability. Unlike traditional self-propelled howitzers, the system is optimized for modern, networked battlefields. Automated ammunition handling, remote turret operation, and advanced targeting software enable rapid fire missions with minimal crew exposure. The platform can engage targets quickly after stopping and relocate immediately, reducing detection and counter-fire risks. The turret’s automated magazine carries 30 rounds and supports MRSI engagements, allowing multiple shells to impact a single target simultaneously. Leveraging the Boxer vehicle provides strategic advantages for the UK, which has already committed to a large Boxer fleet across multiple roles. This common platform approach improves sustainment efficiency, enhances force mobility, and reinforces NATO interoperability, positioning the RCH 155 as a potential cornerstone of future European artillery capabilities.
