Germany has initiated the development of an operational high-energy laser weapon system for its navy through a partnership between MBDA Deutschland and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition. The program will deliver a fully integrated maritime directed-energy weapon capable of target detection, tracking, engagement, and battle management. Building upon extensive sea trials conducted aboard the frigate Sachsen, the laser system demonstrated precision engagement against aerial, maritime, and surface targets under diverse operational conditions. Once operational, the system will complement conventional naval guns and missile defenses by providing rapid-response, low-cost interception of drones, missiles, and asymmetric threats while minimizing ammunition expenditure.
