Germany’s ongoing infantry modernization has taken a major step forward with Rheinmetall winning a multi-year contract worth several hundred million euros to supply laser-light modules for the Bundeswehr’s new assault rifle program. The contract was triggered following parliamentary budget approval and represents the first confirmed call-off under a long-standing framework agreement concluded in mid-2021. Rheinmetall will deliver LLM-VarioRay modules over the next seven years, with options for expanded procurement, reinforcing Germany’s long-term commitment to upgrading soldier lethality and situational awareness. Production will be handled by Rheinmetall Soldier Electronics in Stockach, providing sustained industrial activity as the Bundeswehr modernizes its small-arms ecosystem. The LLM-VarioRay combines visible and infrared lasers, a white-light source, and an adjustable infrared illuminator, allowing seamless transition between operational modes in low-visibility and night-fighting conditions. Already fielded by the British and Swiss armies, the system supports Germany’s Future Soldier architecture by integrating seamlessly with sensors, night-vision equipment, and battlefield management systems.
