A European armament organization has contracted a Cyprus-based supplier to deliver a next-generation thermal clip-on, marking a pragmatic move to upgrade frontline optics without scrapping installed sights. The initial award — roughly €50 million, with a follow-on option of €150 million — will see systems produced and supported in partnership with a German industrial services house that takes charge of field logistics and aftersales sustainment through 2026–2027. The IRIS-C is not a standalone night sight; it is a bolt-on thermal module that fuses thermal and low-light imagery to revitalize legacy optics, enabling operators to detect, identify, and track targets more effectively under varied visibility and weather conditions. When coupled with the supplier’s Smart Battery Pack or Smart Gateway, the clip-on becomes a node in a wider digital battlespace, displaying augmented reality overlays such as friend-or-foe markers, mission waypoints, and target recognition aids, and feeding information into existing Battle Management Systems for shared situational awareness. The approach makes sense for forces seeking rapid capability gains without wholesale platform replacement: keep the optics, add a high-value sensor and network connectivity, then sustain it locally through a German partner to shorten logistics tails.
